Tropical Storm Gabrielle strengthens into hurricane; impacts on NC coast forecast
Tropical Storm Gabrielle strengthened into a hurricane Sunday afternoon southeast of Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean, forecasters said. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said at 11 p.m. Sunday that Gabrielle’s maximum sustained winds increased to 75 mph and gusts were at 90 mph.
Central Atlantic wave: Located west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, the system is producing limited convection. Dry air should inhibit development in the near term, but conditions may improve later in the week. The NHC gave it a 10 percent chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a 60 percent chance through seven days.
MIAMI — After a quiet stretch, the tropical Atlantic has woken up with Tropical Storm Gabrielle and a tropical wave southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
A struggling Gabrielle continues to traverse the warm Atlantic and is expected to reach hurricane status by Sunday.
Gabrielle is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane as it tracks east of Bermuda and later turns northeast into the open Atlantic
